Need to complete an Administrator-In-Training (AIT) program?
Follow the steps below to become an AIT:
- Secure a licensed preceptor who can provide training in a licensed facility.
- Develop a Training Plan with your preceptor that aligns with the Domains of Practice.
- Submit an AIT application to the Virginia Board of Long-Term Care Administrators.
- Note: AITs completing their required hours during an internship within a degree or certificate program do not need to submit an application or submit documentation during the completion of their AIT hours.
- Receive Board approval of your AIT application before starting your AIT hours.
- Submit monthly documentation during your AIT program to demonstrate progress on your Training Plan.
- Complete documentation of completion at the conclusion of your AIT program.

Prepare for your NAB Exams
Candidates for licensure may take the NAB exams after approval from the Virginia Board of Long-Term Care Administrators. Candidates must take the CORE exam and either the Nursing Home Administration or Resident Care/Assisted Living exam depending on their intended license.

FAQs
- When can I apply for licensure?
Candidates can apply for licensure after completion of their minimum education and AIT hours. Please refer to the Licensure roadmaps above to understand what are the minimum requirements based on your individual education and work experiences.
- Do I need to apply to become an AIT?
Most prospective AITs will need to submit an application to the Virginia Board of Long-Term Care Administrators before they can begin an AIT program. With your application you will need to include an application fee, proof of education, and a training plan developed with your licensed preceptor. AITs completing their supervised hours as part of their degree or certificate program do not need to complete an application.
- When can I take the NAB exams?
You cannot register for the NAB exam until after submitting your application for initial licensure and receiving approval from the Virginia Board of Long-Term Care Administrators. After receiving approval, you can schedule and take your NAB exams.
- I am already licensed as a Nursing Home Administrator, can I be licensed as an Assisted Living Administrator too?
A licensed Nursing Home Administrator is qualified to serve as an Assisted Living Administrator. An additional license is not required. A licensed Assisted Living Administrator must complete 1500 hours in an AIT program and take the NAB Nursing Home Administration Exam before he or she can be licensed as a Nursing Home Administrator.
