Valuing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion with Elders “Dreaming Home”!
We are excited to share that LeadingAge Virginia, Westminster Canterbury of Richmond, Beth Sholom, Pinnacle Living, Brandermill Woods, and LifeSpire of Virginia sponsored a project in 2022 and 2023 to help elders across multiple demographics in greater Richmond, Virginia to “dream of home."
Our goal was to increase the understanding of the desires and values for home of different elder demographic populations. We also wanted to empower elders and their families with knowledge of senior housing options
within and outside of greater Richmond.
Options shared included: Cohousing;
House Sharing; Housing Cooperatives; Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities; Traditional Retirement Communities; Villages, Continuing Care Retirement Communities; Choosing to live with family with in-home needed services; and other choices identified
as part of this project.
This project has:
- Inclusively helped identify senior living desires based on diverse populations’ values,
- Empowered elders with information on all options and services available in greater Richmond that might help to bring residents’ vision of “home” to reality,
- Helped sponsors envision services and offerings that incorporate diverse elder desires and values for home.
We engaged Kimbrough Consulting to help us to plan and execute this project. We hope the reports from the project inform continued conversation s around making the Greater Richmond Metro region a great place to live.
