Lori Presser, with the National Certification Council of Activity Professionals discusses Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living Regulations both federal and state level including 2019 updated F-Tags, and how the regulations affect the Activity Department, its management, utilization of volunteers, and interventions. It reviews the best practices for Activity Departments during COVID-19. Rev. Kathy Berry addresses recognizing the spiritual needs of elders, especially those living with dementia, as a necessary part of providing holistic care. This webinar, Steven Fuller, PhD, OD, webinar reviews ALs, that began in the early 1980s as a social model alternative to nursing homes, and how it has changed over the past few decades into more of a hospitality model. Discussion of encouraging trends: integrated healthcare as a core service, a delivery of medical services onsite to AL residents using a House Calls model and how this has changed the landscape of ALs.

Session Learning Objectives: contrast how the location of healthcare delivery differs between nursing homes and assisted living; articulate a paradox in assisted living and describe how it negatively impacts resident healthcare outcomes; and, list at least 3 beneficial healthcare outcomes that result from having an integrated care model of assisted living. (recorded 10.13.20) 

Because of the current pandemic, ALs are seeing more acute presentations of residents – both new and current. Tracy Wilson and Staci Freudiger with RehabCare review the short- and long-term ramifications of higher acuity residents in communities and resultant risk of functional decline for the resident and facility staff; and discusses the most common conditions and presentations and how identification, management and prevention through therapy and wellness programming are key to ensuring residents age in place longer, healthier and happier. Session Learning Objectives: understand the impact of higher acuities and associated risks of functional decline on quality of life, aging in place and staffing demands; recognize the most common diagnoses and conditions driving higher acuity in residents and reasons for increased risk of functional decline; identify the most appropriate measures to treat higher acuity residents and prevent functional decline, including referral to outpatient therapy, wellness programming and/or home health services; and understand the available evidence-based and research supported standardized tests that identify early changes and risk and provide a plan for supporting aging in place under the higher acuity paradigm. (recorded 10/27/20)  

From raising a community’s profile through both social media and earned media, to ensuring messaging about how a community is handling the pandemic is being properly positioned in the media, positive coverage in local news outlets translates into thousands of dollars of exposure. This webinar provides the steps to get local media familiar with senior housing communities; shows how media make decisions about what to cover and what not to cover; and shares how to pitch stories and in-house expertise on important issues.

The media might be calling for an unfortunate news or a more a positive story. Whichever the case, no community wants to have a “blind date” when talking with the media. This webinar covers the importance of understanding media deadlines and pressures; how to deal with the media in a crisis; how to create and practice your key messages; and when to say no to the media.

Review of the immunity statues for healthcare providers, immunity protections for volunteers, overview of Governor Northam’s Executive Order 60 on Liability, strategy for additional budget or statutory protection. Additionally, they will review potential liability claims, causes of action and litigation strategies, as well as the interplay between COVID-19 and coverage issues under the Virginia workers’ compensation. Q&A at end.

During a crisis, people behave differently. Many are tense and stressed out, and it shows in their interactions with those around them. Some are fearful of both what is happening today and what tomorrow will look like, while others are grieving actual or perceived losses. So, what is a leader to do in these situations? Leaders are expected to understand the emotions being felt and displayed, and to take these emotions into consideration as they plan for the future. This session will talk about how Emotional Intelligence can help leaders in this situation – exploring what Emotional Intelligence is and how it can be leveraged when leading during a crisis. Exploring how one can work to develop one’s Emotional Intelligence as a leader also will be addressed. (recorded 10.20.20)
