"Promoting Mental Health and Preventing Suicide in Residential LTC"

Tyler Corson, PhD, Program Director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Virginia Beach

Program Description: Dr. Corson will present a two-hour, interactive workshop for participants. The first hour Dr. Corson will teach us how to promote good mental and emotional health in residential communities. In the second hour, Dr. Corson will concentrate more specifically on suicide awareness and specific actions that staff members can take toward suicide prevention.  

About Our Speaker:  Tyler Corson, PhD is a gerontologist. She serves as Program Director for the Virginia Beach affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Dr. Corson earned a Master of Science in Gerontology from the University of Massachusetts, Boston and a PhD in Health Related Sciences from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). She currently teaches at the School of Allied Health at VCU, with expertise in aging issues, mental health and older adults, and family caregiving. She has experience working with older adults both in the community and residential care settings. Dr. Corson works with the VCU and the Department of Social Services to develop curricula and conduct trainings for care providers in assisted living and adult day centers.

Noon – 1:30 PM

After the morning program, you are invited to stay for lunch and network with your colleagues.  If there are follow-up questions to the morning presentation, Dr. Corson will address your questions after lunch.  Before we adjourn, share with Meghan Tomes, Resident Service Network Chairman what future topics you would like to learn about in the upcoming year.

Chaplains will have lunch in a separate room.
